"Eagle Eye" Harry C. Meier, has asked that I had better explain what I meant by colored mounts at the bottom of page 4 in #1, because there really are no commercial color mounts to be bought. Mounts come in black or clear currently. What George and I do to introduce color to our mounts, is to use the clear mounts for protecting the items, and then the mount is stuck with its own "stickum" to colored paper cut to size, that size being just larger than the item in the clear mount. |

The colored paper can be of any thickness as it is the color that is important. I try to not get too heavy a paper or cardboard because the entire thing (item, mount, and colored backing) is being hinged to the exhibit page. While the majority of the items have a very thin colored backing showing, prize items or those that you want to be noticed, will usually have a SLIGHTLY larger colored backing. |
If the colored paper is not acid free or is subject to having the color run if it gets moistened, you will have to consider mounting all items in clear mounts first. That means covers and other larger items. |
It is not necessary to have colored paper backing behind clear mounts. Some material does not want or need it. Other material looks better with it. It is a decision that you have to make. |
The most important things to remember when using the black commercial mounts or the "make your own" colored mounts, are to cut them straight with a cutter and not shears, to cut sharp right corners, to try and cut the same amount of color on all four sides, and to have a consistency in amount of color shown for all items except for the highlighted ones. |
