United Nations Paris General Assemblies |
1948 and 1951 |
Although World War II had ended three years earlier, the work of reassembling Europe and addressing larger issues resulting from its aftermath such as refugees, human rights, and atomic weapons, continued unabated. The third session of the General Assembly met from 3 September through 12 December 1948 in the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France. Again in 1951, due to the new United Nations building in New York not being ready for use as anticipated, the sixth General Assembly met once more in the same location from 6 November 1951 through 8 February 1952 with many of the same isues on its agenda. |

During these periods, over half of the personnel assigned to the United Nations Secretariat were relocated to Paris for the duration of these meetings. With them came the need for postal service, much of which was arranged through the French postal system. Temporary post offices were established for these procedings within the Palais for use of the delegates as well as the support staff and visitors. |

This exhibit documents the postal facilities used by conference participants as well as the people and events of these meetings. |
