United Nations Geneva Office Under Swiss Administration |
|||
|
At the close of World War II, the first General Assembly of the United Nations in London approved a plan which granted the fledgling United Nations organization League of Nations propery and Geneva became the permanent seat of the United Nations European Office on 2 January, 1947. Initial postal service was provided by Swiss authorities at a substation within the Palais des Nations using regular Swiss postal issues until 1 February, 1950. An agreement with Switzerland provided for 20 regular values to receive overprints for the exclusive use of the United Nations European Office in Geneva. These provisional issues paid postage on all official mail originating from all departments of the European Office until 1 October, 1956, when specially designed stamps were issued by Switzerland and the overprinted values were removed from service. The exhibit concentrates on the postal administration of the United Nations European Office in Geneva and its 22 years of operation. Examples of adhesive issues, varieties, cancellation device types, postal rates, foreign usages, unusual markings, special services, department origin cachets, postal administration (UNPA) as well as post office (UNPO) usages and late posting are included in these pages. The covers displayed are exclusively official service covers of the agency. The single most important items of this collecting area are the paste-up coil strips of which there are two sets recorded and only one set has a pair of each value as depicted to the right. All four values (from both issues) are included in the exhibit with an example postcard showing correct usage by visitors to the facility as the stamp vending machine was in the public area. |
