Neandertal

The Man Who Almost Was

View the latest pages 'Bone and Stone'.

When fossilized bones were found in a cave in 1856, a violent rejection of the notion that humans had evolved from primitive forms ensued and disputes abounded.

Controversy continued until fairly recent discoveries convinced researchers of fossil man's existence. Neandertals lived in Europe from approximately 105,000 to 35,000 years ago. They are not our direct ancestors, although aspects of their behavior resemble modern humans.

This exhibit explores our knowledge of the 'classic' Neandertals of western Europe. Subject areas range from their immediate ancestors, various forms, daily habits (Mousterian culture), and stone age technology to their replacement by more modern human forms and scientific study.
