My father, mentor in stamp collecting and life in general, considers the U.S. large banknote issues the most beautiful stamps printed. In 1975, at age 27, I resumed collecting after a 12-year hiatus, but lacked real focus. The departmental stamps came to my attention, and I set myself the challenge of assembling a complete set. To this day, that specialized field remains my exclusive philatelic interest.

By sheer coincidence, one of the great experts in the field, Lester C. Lanphear, also lives here in San Diego. My research studies have been greatly facilitated by the cooperation of fellow specialists in this field, all of whom I consider dear friends.
